I finally finally got to watch Black Panther.  And not at HD quality at that because like I said in my “need of a theatre” post, we have to depend on what is uploaded following the movie in order to see it.  So that means I waited patiently for two months so that I could see the movie and judge for myself.

But was the movie really worth all the hype?!?!

To be honest, I didn’t think so.  I mean it was a good movie but not so extraordinary that I felt it truly deserved all the hype it received.  Because of all the videos of the dance challenges I had seen I was here looking at the movie and waiting on a ritual dance by the tribe in Wakanda – kind of a let down.  When the King was asked what Wakanda can do for the world and it went black all I could say was “that’s it !?”  … I was waiting for more.

The movie started really slow and picked up closer to the middle.  While the parts leading up the “action” scenes were not boring I personally found it just a bit repetitious.  I kept hoping the plot would get there so that it does not get boring.  One of the things I loved though, is the advanced technology of Wakanda.  The advancements were off the chain and there was that feeling of “ooohh this is pretty cool” throughout the movie.

But I will say that there are movies that I have seen that are more exciting than Black Panther was –  to me ofcourse.

I think the hype was more because the cast was predominantly black and not necessarily that the movie itself was awesome.  So in that case I am all for the hype.  It was rather good seeing a cast of mostly black people.  For so long blacks have stood in the backgrounds of a predominantly white industry so the movie was actually a truly good way to embrace black culture and celebrate the talent of black actors and actresses.

I think I maybe I grade too harshly when I look at movies.  But sometimes I do so based on the “hype” that I see, since I don’t get to see it long after it has been released.  Often times I have found myself liking movies that don’t even get that much hype but to me they are awesome.  To each his own I guess.

So overall I would maybe give it a 7 on 10.  Maybe jump up to an 8 because it ended making me want to see more and ended in a way to suggest that there may be a part 2 coming soon.  So let’s hope it comes along soon enough.
