Christians throughout the world are observing Good Friday today. Today is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. But do we truly understand the message that today offers?

Here in Dominica, we do a walk in order to attempt to follow the steps of the walk that Jesus had to go through on his way to the crucifixion. The “stations of the cross”, as it is known, and fourteen in total, takes us on the journey Christ had to go through.

Jesus died for us…. He died so that we could live for Him (2 Corinthians 5:15). Understanding this ultimate sacrifice makes me, as an individual and as a Christian, ever so grateful for His unfailing love.

Good Friday to me is a day for reflection. Reflection on His mercies, His love, His sacrifice. Reflection on my own “crucifixion” in order to be risen and born again. There is always so much more that we can do to grow in our faith and so much more that we can strive for. We continue to learn with every sacrifice that we make and with every “station” that we go through in our lives.

Just as Jesus fell while carrying His cross, so too we will fall. But in falling we must always find the strength to get up and keep going. Because we are on mission and that mission requires us to be strong and steadfast for the purpose of accomplishing that mission.

Just as Simon helped Jesus to carry the cross, so too we should look to God as our help in every difficulty that we face.  Knowing that He is always there to help us and all we need to do is call on Him and accept when He knocks to offer us that help.

Good Friday offers us as Christians the opportunity to understand and appreciate what Christ had to go though for our sake. But it also forces us to dig deeper into our own lives and carry our own crosses as we journey in Faith.

Do have a Blessed and Spirit Filled day.
