Now we can’t argue that this is a weird combination. I dont think I recall ever having experienced Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s day fall on the same day. So ofcourse I had to google to confirm and the last time this occured was the year 1945.. yup that long ago.

This could somehow pose a challenge for many who observe Ash Wednesday and who may normally celebrate Valentine’s day as well. I mean do we choose the chocolates and wine that Valentine’s day offers or do we observe the ashes and fasting that Ash Wednesday offers??

I remember someone posting on Facebook earlier in the year that Catholics will have a tough year because Valentine’s ’ day is on Ash Wednesday and all fool’s day is Easter Sunday hahaha.. I could not help but laugh when I saw that comment. It may be a funny comment but actually allows one to think of what really is important.

But I have found that the two occasions being observed on the same day may actually have a deeper connection than we think. Ash Wednesday allows for us to reflect on our lives and understand that we are from dust and to dust we will return. It also begins the season of Lent. A season in which we understand the ultimate sacrifice when Jesus died for us because He loved us.

Valentine’s day allows for an expression of love for each other. A love that is most often celebrated through gifts, flowers, cards and more.

So in essence it’s a day to celebrate love. The love that Jesus had for us when He gave up his life to save us and remind us that we are from dust and to dust we shall return. And the love that we have for one another and that we should always share that love.

So I, for one, think that the two on the same day makes the day even more special as we are forced to reflect on the meaning of both and what they truly signify in our lives. Celebrating Valentine’s day can happen without the fancy meals and wine but quiet spent with a loved one. . And in that quiet time the reflections of Ash Wednesday can be ever present. Because every solid relationship is built on God as the foundation.

And where God is, there is Love.

So a Blessed Ash Wednesday and a Loving Valentine’s day to all of you. May your day be filled with loving reflections to last a lifetime.
