It’s carnival Monday here in Dominica. Not the typical type of celebrations because the effects of hurricane Maria was felt in every single sector of the country. But none the less there are those who continue to contribute to this aspect of our country’s culture and there is still some form of “good time” to be had.
The annual calypso finals was held this past Saturday and, in spite of the bad weather, was hailed a success from all reports. The show saw a contender who had been at it for seventeen years finally walking away with the title of Calypso King. Going by calypso name De Bobb, he captured the Dominican public this year with his hit songs “when people doh like you” and “go and sing the truth Bobb”. Now let me say here that I listened to the songs for the first time today, while writing this post. Shameful I know. But I will be honest and say that I am not a fan of Calypso and his voice made it difficult because I got accustomed to him singing in other genres of music and found they were better suited to his voice.
But listening to those songs made me realize that’s it’s people like me he was speaking to in one of those songs. I had never given him a chance as a calypsonian. And those songs are actually very well written and well delivered too. And from all reports his win was very fair and deserving so hats off to him. The usual “j’ouvert jump-up” that begins the two days of reveling were affected as well. The once 4 a.m start event was moved to 6 a.m this year. So hours for the carnival activities today are 6 a.m to 6 p.m and tomorrow 8 a.m to 6 p.m. But even with the cut in the hours Dominicans, I am sure, will make the best of the little they can get in order to have some fun. After all, this provides an opportunity to forget about the stresses that Maria brought.
So to all who will be enjoying the festivities be safe and have fun… meanwhile I am not really into the whole thing so I will be home planning my blog and YouTube content for the week.
