Protective Style Challenge

Hi Lovies,

In keeping with my hair-solutions for this year as listed in my Hair Resolutions post I have decided to take on a protective style challenge.  I think the best way to get the protective styling off the ground is to challenge myself to get it done and ensure that I stick to that challenge.

So for this challenge, I have decided to do one protective style every month, for the next six months in the first instance, and leave it in for at least two weeks … eeekkk *bites nails*.. this might be hard… but I am determined to do this.  As part of the challenge I will do a treatment before styling and ensure that hair is well moisturized.  During the two weeks that the style is in I will do regular scalp massages with an oil mix to ensure that my scalp is being taken care of and to also release any tension from styling.  Not forgetting those strands, I will also mist the hair regularly with the contents in my spray bottle to keep them full of life.  I will give the hair at least one to two weeks break between styles so as to allow the scalp to breathe.

I am late for January since the month is almost done, so I decided to work with my stretched hair from my wash last week to do an updo.  This cute updo was one of the first protective styles I ever tried and loved it, but somehow always felt too lazy or tired to re-do (yup, when laziness strikes the plans go flying out the window).  But no laziness this year.  I plan to keep at the protective styling to get my hand out of my hair.

What I love about this style is  that the twists in the front allow for me to pin up in different ways, making the updo look just a little different depending on what I do.  In twisting I used the SheaMoisture gel souffle so that I can have some nice twist out to the end of wearing the style.

If you are also looking to do protective styling this year, hope you can join in on this challenge.  Are there any other areas that you want to work on this year??? comment below to share

  1. I love your blog. I usually wear protective styles. However, I really don’t like my hair in braided styles because of the tightness sometimes but it is a great way to preserve the life of your hair. By the way I am joining the challenge.
